Development on Charles brings Union to City Council looking for their due

Hotel workers testified at City Council about their frustration at losing their jobs after many years of service. At issue is a request to the City manager to draft a Hotel Workers retention ordinance to stabalize the churn experienced when Hotels change hands. A bigger issue is more development along the banks of the Charles River Estuary. Will the planned development, on the wetlands along the Charles, have an adverse effect on our urban wilds and open space? Will we see the quality of the water of the Charles suffer? Why not an urban wilds and wetlands retention ordinance?

Galeria Mall pumps water into Charles River

Security guards hose during draining of the basement of the Galeria Mall this morning, Dec 12, 2006, while petty shoplifters were making up excuses at the court house less than two blocks away. Traffic in the area was snarled during the morning due to water main break, which left waist/chest high water in the basement.

I observed the hose running through the bushes, and when I inquired as to where the drain was, I was informed they were dumping the water into the "river." More questions produced silience.

I wandered down to the river, where I was informed that they had obtained a permit to drain the water that flooded the basement into the Charles River. Asking who issued the permit, produced more silience.
